Upper Nera River
Fly fishing in Umbria (Upper Nera River) : The spring creek Nera River runs through a steep,
narrow limestone valley in Umbria, not far north of Rome. Averaging 20 to 30 feet in width, its waters are more technical
fly fishing than those of the Tiber. Short, accurate casts are necessary to fool its finicky resident trout.
The majority of fish caught are between 12 and 16 inches, although 18" and up are not uncommon.
Fly fishing while wading as well as the use of streamers and strike indicators are prohibited in some sections,
which is why fish weighing several pounds show up every season.
The area:
The Umbrian countryside is quite rugged. Steep, rocky cliffs are heavily forested and dotted with tiny medieval villages,
isolated abbey, some reachable only by horse, and small towns, such as Spoleto and Norcia. "Cascade della Marmora" scenic 541' falls, man made
by the Romans, in 270 B.C., are nearby.
Other streams such as the Velino, offer more variety in the area, and even closer to Rome, more streams such as the Aniene, Santa Susanna and others,
offer fly fishing excursions that can be a one day trip.
